Review of The Damaged One Trilogy by Mimi Harper

The Damaged One

Synopsis:
Augustus Pierce had always been responsible for his younger siblings. Born to a drug-addicted prostitute, Augustus and his siblings never had a chance. He gave them a chance. He got them out. He gave them a life. But was it all for nothing?

Jackie, Augustus’ youngest sister, was the most innocent. The damaged one. She fell into the same drug abyss that swallowed their mother whole. When Augustus gets that call, the one he had secretly known would come, but the one he prayed he would never get, he has to learn the truth. He has to find the person to blame.

Toby Voss was a student psychotherapist. More importantly, she was the last person to see Jackie alive. Augustus believes she is the one who has the answers he needed. It doesn’t help that she happens to be the most beautiful woman he has ever met. Or that her touch awakens something in his soul that died long ago.

Augustus is determined to fulfill one last promise to Jackie. He just has to find a way to ignore the primal need to bury himself in the one woman who can fulfill his every dream or shatter his very existence.

The Damaged One (Part Two)
Synopsis:
Augustus Pierce is haunted by the death of his youngest sister, Jackie. Her death of an overdose is too reminiscent of the woman who brought them into the world, a woman whose addiction destroyed everything carefree about their lives. But the method of death, her choice of drug, sets off alarm bells that make Augustus wonder if there is something more to her death than addiction.

Toby Voss is the only therapist who was able to get through Jackie’s walls and help her deal with the past that fueled her addiction. She is also the woman who hid from Augustus the identity of Jackie’s drug dealer. When Augustus confronts the dealer, he is surprised to find Toby already there, trying to hide a truth that has more to do with her relationship with Augustus than Jackie’s death.

As Augustus gets closer to the truth, he finds himself pulled in two directions: his need to understand what happened to Jackie and his feelings for a woman who both excites and frightens him.

The Damaged One (Part Three)

Synopsis:
Augustus Pierce has finally found the answers he has been searching for. Now it’s time for him to face a future that is altered, a life he never wanted to live. All he knows is that he wants Toby to be a part of that future. In order for that to happen, however, he has to face the past and deal with unfinished business.

As Augustus struggles with the reality of his life without his beloved sister, Toby faces her own demons. A dark secret from her past comes back to haunt her, shattering the confidence she once had in her own future. Toby pushes Augustus away as she struggles to figure out where her own destiny lies.

When the past sneaks up and shakes the foundation of their new love, will Toby and Augustus be able to find their way back to each other? Will they want to even try?

My review (4 Stars)
This was a true romantic suspense and I thoroughly enjoyed both elements. The suspense was driven and determined as Augustus was nearly single-minded in his quest for the truth surrounding his sister's death. But he also becomes entwined in a passionate relationship with a woman he isn't sure he can trust and who knows more than she is telling. There are so many damaged people in this story, yet it was totally realistic because pain often has a ripple effect in the lives around us. We each suffer things that make us who we are as we find a balance between the ugly and beautiful moments of life. We each have to face our feelings and our motivations. I loved Augustus because, although damaged, he was also very devoted. I loved Toby because she was healed enough to love Augustus and show him that he deserved to receive as much as he was willing to give. In so many ways, she took care of him, and that's what made their love strong. This is truly a story of courage and love on many levels.
