Restoring Love is Available for PRE-ORDER

Pre-order NOW only on Amazon

Release date: September 1, 2016

http://bit.ly/btrestoringlove

I truly enjoyed writing this story about a mature, professional, black woman with a young heart full of laughter and an optimistic outlook about love. It always seems like we wake up one day and our spirit is younger than our body, but life isn't anywhere close to being over. In fact, with 50 right around the corner, so is the start of the the next wonderful season. Will she be traveling into it alone? Oh, most definitely not! Love has a few steamy surprises along the way that aren't wrapped up nicely and neatly, either. But, we know life wouldn't be interesting if it wasn't messy every once in a while.

Amina is 49 and ready for a second wind to blow some excitement into her love life. Too bad Jason, the tall, dark, piece of sweet chocolate was so much younger. Fifteen years is a deal-breaker right?

Obviously not to the very persistent and sexy Jason. He was captivated by Amina's ageless face and shapely body, even if she did try blowing him off. But, fate was on his side. The gorgeous project manager was actually in charge of the renovation of a building his electrical business was contracted to rewire. There was no way he wasn’t going to use seeing her every day to his advantage.

If Jason thought he’d be Amina’s only admirer, he needed to think again. Her boss Wesley—patient, observant, and aware that he might have allowed Amina to take his interest in her a little too lightly—refused to step aside for a young man who didn’t realize her worth.

Thanks to one twist of fate, a mistake Jason may not be able to correct, and an opportunity Wesley won’t let slip away, Amina finds herself with more attention than she ever would have imagined.

The choice is hers to make. Who to love? Who to choose? No deadline. No pressure.

No pressure? Yeah, right.

Something for the Mature Readers

Choosing Love is set to be released

September 1, 2016

Amina is the 49-year-old single mother of a daughter who recently graduated from a Masters program and moved out of the house. With her freedom and a job she loves as the personal assistant to a very successful architect, her sex life is the only area that  needs a little sprucing up. When she meets 34-year-old Jason at a graduation party, sparks fly instantly, but Amina rules out dating him because of his age. Five years above or below is her limit.

As fate would have it, their paths cross two days later when Jason turns out to be the electrical subcontractor on a huge renovation project awarded to her firm, and she's the project manager. Seeing him every day at the Victorian manor makes those sparks visible to more than just the two of them.

Wesley Bender's desire for Amina has never crossed the line into being inappropriate, even though he created the job she hold simply because he wanted her closer and knew she could handle the responsibilities. His harmless flirting is funny but never overbearing. The rules are clear. Amina doesn't date older men. Amina doesn't date coworkers. Amina would never date her boss. Wesley has heard it all. His heart isn't listening. But his brain definitely isn't missing what's going on between Amina and Jason.

Before Wesley can wrap his head around what's happening, Amina has broken her rules and the relationship with Jason is serious. His second chance comes when Jason breaks Amina's heart. Unfortunately, Jason is sorry and wants a second chance, too. But Wesley has no intention of making the same mistake twice -- Amina is his and he intends to prove it to her.

Enjoy this brief excerpt where both men's suspicions are raised:

They didn’t hear the front door open and close. Thankfully, they did hear Wesley calling for her from the bottom of the stairs.

“I’m on the third floor.” She made sure her clothes were straight and headed toward her boss. Jason disappeared into the room he’d been working on as Amina started down the stairs.

“I have a late dinner meeting with a potential client,” Wesley was saying as they both reached the second floor landing at the same time. “I thought you might want to tag along.”

“The way I’m dressed?” She shook her head and hoped he didn’t notice anything different in the way she was breathing or the fact that she must certainly be flushed from those hot kisses. “I’ll pass.”

“You look fine. You always look fine.” His words were almost a caress.

“Right. I’ve probably got concrete dust in my hair and dirt on my slacks.”

“Turn around; let me see.”

“Behave, Mr. Bender.”

“Aww, you’re killing me, Ms. Baker.”

“You always say that.” She offered a quiet laugh.

“It’s always true.” There was a long pause before a pensive, “Hmm, do you think we could add a requirement to your employment contract for you to accompany me to these events? I’d gladly give you a wardrobe allowance and extra pay.”

“Are you kidding me?” Amina crossed her arms and sent her boss and admonishing glare.

“What?! The clients always love you.”

“No.”

“You could have two hours of paid time to primp.” The teasing mischievousness in his voice was unmistakable.

“No.”

“I’ll build you a special closet in the back of my conference room for your personal wardrobe. You wouldn’t even have to go all the way home to change!”

“No!” Amina was shaking her head and laughing by this point.

Wesley gave a dramatic sigh followed by a long silence that felt oddly uncomfortable to Amina.

“Why are you still here, anyway?” The soft words were suddenly serious and Wesley’s eyes didn’t leave her face.

“Jason wanted to finish in a room upstairs before we leave. He’s shorthanded and doesn’t want to get behind schedule.

“Really? How late are you going to hang around?”

She shrugged. “He promised to be done by 8:00.” That was what he’d said. Wesley was silent again.

“Well, be careful when you leave.”

“I will.”

“Good.”

Sound is amplified in an empty house. Jason heard the exchange, the pauses, the footsteps, and the door close behind Wesley. One thing was definitely clear—Wesley Bender was interested in much more than a business relationship with Amina Baker.

The Lovers' Retreat

This excerpt is the first chapter of my first interracial romance. Ramona Adams is in for a huge shock when she's sent to a conference for her job and nothing is like she expected.

I'm planning to release this novella within the next month. Of course, the cover art hasn't been finalized but I'm too excited to know what you think about this project to wait for that.

Chapter One:

An Unexpected Twist

Ramona stared at the itinerary for the conference she was scheduled to attend in a couple of days. It was a good thing she hadn’t set the information packet aside, assuming it was simply the information she’d already seen. After reading the notation at the bottom of the page twice, double-checking the original email from the previous week, and thinking about the conversations she’d had with her supervisor, nothing made sense. The conference is in the Virgin Islands. There will be plenty of down time and access to shopping, night clubs, horses, swimming pools, and a casino. Please be sure to pack the appropriate clothes. Really?

She sent her boss an email questioning the details and got an almost immediate reply that he was sure everything was fine. That was all? She tamped down the temptation to call him. He’d been in back-to-back meetings for several days and probably wouldn’t appreciate being distracted.

When Caleb had given her short notice to replace him at a week-long business conference, it hadn’t bothered her. Of course she could go. It wasn’t as though she had a life. No husband or boyfriend to complain. No children to make arrangements for. No parents to tell her she was working too hard and that the company was taking advantage of her. Otherwise, she’d fill her empty evenings and weekend as she usually did, going over projects and forecasts. It was either that or let her mind drift to thoughts of the relationship she wanted but knew she’d never have.

Yeah, she needed a break.

Would she be expected to participate in all of those activities? She’d never been on a horse. Did she even own appropriate swimsuit? With her reddish-brown skin and frizzy deep brown hair that she worked hard to tame, sunbathing and swimming weren’t high on her list of leisure activities. Oh well, she was the well-paid Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer of a midsize corporation. It was a dream job that she loved. With a soft sigh and a slight shrug, she admitted to herself that she would always do whatever was needed to make them look good.

Last minute instructions required an emergency shopping trip. Thankfully, her best friend Marisa was able to rearrange her schedule and take the afternoon off. After a quick lunch and four stores, Marisa was passing garments over the wall of the dressing room and chatting while Ramona tried on item after item.

“What do you think?” Ramona stepped into the area between fitting rooms to check herself in the large three-sided mirror.

“That looks great,” her best friend nodded in approval. “All those hours on the treadmill have paid off.”

“I don’t know.” Ramona turned to get a better view of her butt and firm thighs. The copper color perfectly complimented her skin, but was the swimsuit cut too high? The bikini definitely made her legs look longer, but this was still a business conference, not a Young Black Professional’s singles soiree. “I’m not sure how much skin is appropriate. Maybe I should be a little more conservative.”

“Nonsense! Get both suits.” Marisa grinned and held up the emerald one-piece with a plunging neckline and tasteful cut-out on the sides. “You can always get this cover-up for the bikini.”

“Oh, this definitely requires a cover-up!” Ramona glanced at the sheer coral cover dangling from her friend’s hand. It would look good with the both the green and the copper suits. And it was long enough to come halfway down her thighs.

“How are you supposed to dress for the casino?” Marisa asked now that her friend was back inside the changing room.

“That outfit I wore to Paul’s wedding should be okay.”

Marisa considered the wide-legged chiffon pants and, even though Ramona couldn’t wear a bra with it, a loose gold top that tastefully swooped in the front and back. She approved.

“And, what are you going to do about your hair? The humidity will probably be crazy.” Marisa gave a frown at her friend who was emerging from the dressing room with her natural curls sticking out all over the place. She watched Ramona ruffle her hair with her fingers to fluff them back into shape. Unprocessed hair was not for everyone but this woman wore it well.

Nearly shoulder length with a loose curl pattern, her hair looked like she always had a personal stylist. Quite honestly, if Marisa was confident that her hair would look anything like her friend’s, she might give up the relaxer and go natural, too. Nah—natural was too much work.

“Well,” Ramona was saying, “I’m going to wear it like this and hope I won’t actually be expected to get in the water.” She frowned at the swimwear and tossed it into the cart before she could change her mind. “For the casino, I’ll probably pin up the back because it could get a little hot if the place is crowded. And also, I want to show off that swooping neckline.” She laughed. “Now, if I actually get up enough courage to ride a horse, I’ll just slap a band on it to keep it out of my face.” She flung her purse strap onto her shoulder and shrugged. “I’m going to bring my Kindle and spend as much time as possible relaxing with a good book. Hopefully, there will be plenty of time when my presence won’t be required.”

“That’s so boring!”

“I never claim to be an exciting person, and you didn’t just meet me. Plus, you used to be as much of a workaholic as I am.” She shook her head. “Honestly, I feel a little unsettled by this whole social element to the agenda. I try to keep my professional and social lives separate.”

“What social life?” Marisa laughed. “Three dates in two months, Sunday dinners at my house, and babysitting my bad-ass three-year-old so I can have a date night with Bryan is not the same as socializing.”

Ramona laughed, too. Her friend was right.

It wasn’t as though she hadn’t tried to have a life outside of working and exercising. It was just that the same old cliché kept catching up with her—men wanted a woman who could look up to them and need them, not one who was opinionated and made more money than they did. She never talked about money, but one guy had straight out told her that it was obvious by the way she handled herself that she definitely wasn’t the type of woman to hang out at happy hour waiting on some man to buy her a drink. “And no offense,” he’d added, “but you don’t throw off that booty-call vibe.”

“No offense taken.”

She didn’t want to be short-time fling or the girl on the side, even though she had one “sex-buddy” that she suspected was serious about someone else. Hey, everyone had their exceptions. But she needed something more than a man that could stimulate her body. She wanted to debate about politics and have the occasional candle-light dinner. Little red glass globes with floating tea light candles didn’t count.

Marisa’s husband, Bryan, had tried to hook Ramona up with some of his friends. Whether they had been black, Hispanic, African, or white, none of them had clicked with her. Too many professional men spent too much time talking about their professions. No one took the time to know that she liked to bowl, that she could talk football with the best of her male friends, loved shooting tequila and good whiskey as long as she didn’t have to drive, and was a junkie for action movies. Typical man things, right? Hang out with the boys things, right?

Bryan’s friends were nice, but they seemed to be more impressed with the fact that she was beautiful, intelligent, and career minded. They always seemed to compliment her on her ambition without understanding that being a workaholic hadn’t been one of her life plans.

Ramona also wondered whether, even though she didn’t consider herself to be shallow, the dating cliché worked both ways. Was she only interested in a man who made more money than her, lived in a bigger house, and looked good at the work-related socials she periodically attended? She didn’t think so. That would mean she was also looking for an obsessed partner, and that wasn’t true. Two workaholics simply wouldn’t have time for raising a family, and she definitely wanted to have children. The corporate grind was becoming less and less satisfying. She would be willing to cut back on her obligations to her company, but would he? She didn’t want parenthood to be a one-sided priority. She wanted an old-fashioned family with two parents, three kids, and lots of love.

If only the one guy she liked was an option. Oh well ...

She sighed, paid for her purchases, and treated her best friend to dinner.

PREMONITIONS: Dream Catcher Series ~ Book 1

Stephanie is drawn to Chaz in a way that she has never experienced—by a connection through dreams that tell her things she isn’t supposed to know. While those dreams expose Chaz’s secrets and pull Stephanie into his dangerous world, she’s willing to follow the attraction to see where it might lead.

Chaz knows better than to get emotionally attached, but he can’t resist seeing her again. He can’t fight the spiritual force that binds them, and he doesn’t want to. When his life is threatened, he must make difficult choices and find a way to protect both of them as he handles his mysterious job.

LOVING NIGHT: Dream Catcher Series ~ Book 2

Chaz took a desk job at the FBI to protect the woman he loves from the psychic connection that pulls her into the middle of his dangerous investigations. Yet, when he is forced to lead another undercover assignment, she must be the one to keep him safe.

They think they understand how her predictive dreams work; but neither of them anticipates the way her gift is evolving. Nighttime dreams turn into daytime visions. Knowledge of what is happening with Chaz turns into an acute awareness of what other people are feeling. It’s new. It’s unpredictable. Neither of them understands these changes until an old enemy that she fears appears in new dreams.

Paul Watkins still wants Chaz dead. As Chaz and Stephanie work more closely on this new dangerous mission, it’s clear that there is no room for failure. They must bring this man to justice.

With danger moving closer to home, the threat becomes greater than ever. It only makes Stephanie and Chaz more determined. No one will destroy the life they are building. No one will weaken their bond. Every night they spend in each other’s arms only makes them stronger. But will they be strong enough to survive Paul Watkins and the evil that always surrounds him?

HEART SHADOWS: Dream Catcher Series ~ Book 3

No one doubts that Chaz is a devoted husband and father, or that he is beginning to resent his job as an FBI Special Agent. As he becomes more and more determined to protect his family from the dangers that always come with his job, he and Stephanie take strongly opposing positions. A horrible tension creeps into the relationship, threatening to destroy a love that is supposed to be unbreakable. How can this be happening to soul mates?

Stephanie whole-heartedly believes that whenever Chaz has a choice, he’ll choose her. She also knows she’ll always help him. However, neither of them knows what to do when his strong instincts and her psychic visions are no longer in tune. The distance between them is gaining a stronger foothold with each new day, and one thing is clear—one of them is definitely wrong about what’s best for their future.

DREAM CATCHER SERIES ~ BOOK 3 is coming soon!

Matters of the heart are the most powerful issues to consider as we navigate through life. In Heart Shadows, the final book of the Dream Catcher Series, we're introduced to what might be a new budding romance. My loyal readers might have suspected I would bring Steve and Vanessa back since they're such interesting characters in Loving Night. But did you think they'd be together ... as a couple? Hmm. Will they or won't they?

Here's a scene to tempt you.

Steve leaned past Vanessa and opened a drawer. He pulled out a large plastic bag, dumped the unclaimed brownies into it, and zipped it shut. He settled onto a stool and pushed the bag as far away from the poacher as he could.

“I didn’t mean to insult you,” he said sincerely. Vanessa shrugged and kept eating. “My point, that I obviously didn’t make very well, was that you were successful in getting a known criminal to fall in love with you, and I respect your talent and sacrifice because what you did was dangerous and difficult. I just think that you could use those same skills of persuasion to win over your team members. That would help your relationships with them as well as the investigation.”

“Hmm … con my coworkers into liking me. That sounds like a wonderful idea because, after all, I wouldn’t want anyone to get to know the real me and think that maybe Vanessa isn’t so bad, that maybe she actually is a likeable person.” She finally looked at Steve and wasn’t totally successful at hiding the hurt that mixed with her anger.

“Is that your recommendation, Supervisory Special Agent Steve McDaniels? That I don’t even bother making real friends? Because it’s easy being a female FBI Agent in a new city, in a position that other agents would kill for, and a situation where I have to prove—again—that I’m more than just a pretty body that could con and betray a criminal, right? It’s no big deal that people think female agents who go deep under like I did are liars and whores who naturally fit into those roles.” She spread her hands in a gesture of surrender. “I honestly didn’t expect that from a man who has led undercover operations that I respected and was excited to be working with.” She stood and pulled her keys from a front pocket. “I thought … What I thought doesn’t matter.”

She looked around for Chaz and Stephanie so that she could say good-bye, but they’d obviously slipped away at some point during her quiet rant.

“Special Agent Long, please sit down.” Steve stood and waved a hand toward the stool she had just vacated.

“Are you seriously going to pull rank?” Fire flashed in her eyes for the man who towered over her by at least six inches and was addressing her in the same tone he uses in the office.

“No, but you’re going to sit down and hear me out the same way I listened to what you had to say. Now sit. Please.”

“I prefer to stand.” She crossed her arms and glared at him.

In less than two seconds, Steve had grabbed her shoulders, pushed her down onto the stool, and caged her in by placing his hands on either side of her tense body. He could almost feel the heat rolling off her.

“You’re going to sit and you’re going to listen.” He stared into her eyes and remained silent until he saw acquiescence there. When he spoke again, his voice was softer in both tone and volume.

“Everything you said about the way people perceive you and how difficult it can be to regain the respect of other agents after you’ve been deep undercover is true. I wasn’t thinking about any of that when I made my flippant suggestion, and for that I apologize.” He shook his head slowly without breaking eye contact. “I didn’t mean to hurt you as an agent or as a woman. I’ve never thought any of those things where you’re concerned, and I promise that you have earned and will always have my complete respect.

“You weren’t supposed to know this, but I quietly fought to bring you to Cincinnati. I found out about you from Chaz when your investigations crossed in Kentucky. I followed your case and admired your commitment and professionalism. When I watched the video of the arrest of Damien Granger, I didn’t only see a beautiful woman who had conned and betrayed a criminal. I saw a powerful and strong agent who deserves the promotion you’ve been given and you should never have to defend your integrity again—you’ve given more than most people can imagine.

“There weren’t any opportunities for you in Indianapolis or St. Louis, so I helped to make one here. When Pete Richards, who happens to be a friend, mentioned that he was thinking about retiring, we manipulated a few procedures and relationships so that you would get his position. That’s how much I admire and respect you. So, I’m going to ask you again, Vanessa, to please forgive me.”

“Okay,” she whispered after a long silence. “You’re forgiven.”

Steve could read the conflicting and confusing emotions behind her eyes. He forced himself to step back. There was so much more that he wanted to say but knew he couldn’t. No, he didn’t only see her as a beautiful woman who had seduced and conned a criminal; but he definitely didn’t just see her as an amazing agent either.

“As a peace offering, I’ll even let you take all of the brownies.”

Vanessa smiled and shook her head. “Sir, you really need to do something about your addiction.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” He shoved his hands into his pockets and took another step back. He definitely needed to get himself under control. “Give me a minute and I’ll walk you to your car.”

When she stood and twirled her keys around in her hand, Steve grabbed the bag of brownies, unzipped it, and shoved the ones she’d neatly stacked on her napkin in with the others. He dampened a paper towel and wiped off the counter before announcing that he was ready to leave.

“You’re really taking those brownies?” Vanessa had re-crossed her arms and was staring at him.

“What? I agreed that I need to do something about my addiction. That doesn’t mean I’m going to start today. It would be sacrilegious to let these go to waste.” Steve didn’t crack a smile.

“Seriously?” Vanessa marched over to the drawer she’d seen him open earlier and procured a second plastic bag. Holding it out to him, she said, “If you’re not leaving them here, then you’re going to share.” She raised an impatient eyebrow when he didn’t move to take the bag.

“Damn, you’re bossy.” He frowned but his eyes held warmth and admiration.

“I’m a federal agent; what do you expect?” She held the bag open while he retrieved the ones he’d wrapped in her napkin and dumped them into it.

“Good. Now you can walk me to my car.”

Steve didn’t let her see him roll his eyes and bite back a smile as he followed her out of the kitchen.

AMAZON'S UNFAIRNESS TO INDIE AUTHORS

Indie authors generate reviews and find new readers by using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to connect. Apparently, Amazon interprets that as establishing personal relationships. Once that determination is made, that person isn't going to be allowed to post reviews of the author's books. This definitely impacts the fact that all of my beta-readers and bloggers are in some way connected to me via Facebook. Either they have liked my fan page, become a friend, or respond to my posts seeking participants in my blog tours. What Amazon has done amounts to pulling the rug completely from under the indie author and sabotaging important elements of our promotion strategies.

How is an indie author (especially a new one without a strong reader following) supposed to advance in the rankings in order to trigger the algorithm that prompts Amazon to participate in the promoting, reach bloggers/beta-readers for more "unbiased" reviews, or make ourselves visible to new readers? Should we never expect to reach an "Amazon Best Seller" status? Many of us are not visible to major reviewers where we can achieve best seller status, such as New York Times or USA Today. This situation is very disheartening and I'm at my wits end trying to find a way to survive in a very competitive profession.

Please -- if your review is ever not posted for an indie author -- challenge Amazon. It's a tedious process, yet, independent authors have few tools by which to convince them that this policy/practice is totally unfair.

In addition to this, under the Kindle Unlimited program, Amazon is no longer paying an author when the reader has completed 10% of the book. It is paying us per page and only when the book is initially read. Therefore, if a person buys a book and does not finish it at the time they start reading (at the end of July) but finishes it after their family reunion (in August), it's unclear as to whether we will get paid for the full book, since royalties are calculated at the end of each month and the purchase can only be counted once. Additionally, why should we not get paid simply because the book is purchased when Amazon continues to get paid when the book is bought?

More and more, I'm convinced that, although Amazon publishes authors using their Kindle Direct Publishing, it stacks the deck against those same independent authors. Your voice, as readers and bloggers, can make a difference in how we're treated, so please consider that when interacting with Amazon.

Thank you for your support.

Loving Night is Almost Here!

Release Day, June 1st, is finally around the corner! I am very excited to share this new novel with you. Stephanie and Chaz made us believe in destiny in the first book of the Dream Catcher series. In this second book, we see how their love grows stronger, her psychic gifts become more complex, and the dangers they face move closer to home.

Suspense. Suspense. Suspense! The question is: How will they handle it?

It's time to give a bit more of a peek into the novel than I have with previous excerpts. This time, you'll get to read the first THREE chapters of Loving Night: Dream Catcher Series ~ Book 2. Simply click on the link below and start reading. I can almost guarantee you'll be anxious for the rest of the book. Hmm ... Maybe you'll want to head over to Amazon and pre-order it when you're done.

You Can Help Me Spread the Word

I've started a THUNDERCLAP campaign and would love for each of you to support me by signing up to share the announcement of my newest book on your Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts.

What is THUNDERCLAP? It's a way to introduce an event to a large group of people at one time. I'm using it to herald the release of Loving Night: Dream Catcher Series - Book 2. All you have to do is sign up (a widget is conveniently located on this home page). At noon on May 31st, the message I've created will be blasted to you and all of your followers on those social media sites. Don't worry -- it will only happen once so no one will get spammed. Right now, my announcement can reach over 57,000 people. That's a great number, but there are so many more readers out there that I'm sure will enjoy this book. You can help me to reach them.

There's just one catch. In order for my message to be seen by any of those people, 100 of my family, friend, and fans will need to sign up for my campaign. If I don't get 100 participants, no message will be sent. You can see the status bar in the widget, so it's clear that I have a long way to go.

Sign up. Share the link with your family and friends so that they can also sign up right now. And we all can smile on May 31st when the "clap" goes out and everyone gets my message at the same time. It's only with your help that I can hope to be successful. As always, I sincerely appreciate each person who chooses to be a part of this magnificent experience as a writer.

Loving Night is Coming Soon!

June 1, 2015 is the release date for Loving Night, the 2nd novel in the Dream Catcher romantic suspense series.

This book was a lot of fun to write. The continuing story of Stephanie and Chaz Lawson not only provided an opportunity to further demonstrate their intense love for each other, it gave me a chance to show the couple truly working together as a team. This is a story of a great partnership -- one that must survive the dangerous life that Chaz is not completely able to leave behind.

Old characters turn up in new situations. New psychic elements begin to surface. Drama. Danger. Love. Commitment.  This book has it all. It's currently available to pre-order on Amazon, so reserve your copy today.
