AMAZON'S UNFAIRNESS TO INDIE AUTHORS

Indie authors generate reviews and find new readers by using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to connect. Apparently, Amazon interprets that as establishing personal relationships. Once that determination is made, that person isn't going to be allowed to post reviews of the author's books. This definitely impacts the fact that all of my beta-readers and bloggers are in some way connected to me via Facebook. Either they have liked my fan page, become a friend, or respond to my posts seeking participants in my blog tours. What Amazon has done amounts to pulling the rug completely from under the indie author and sabotaging important elements of our promotion strategies.

How is an indie author (especially a new one without a strong reader following) supposed to advance in the rankings in order to trigger the algorithm that prompts Amazon to participate in the promoting, reach bloggers/beta-readers for more "unbiased" reviews, or make ourselves visible to new readers? Should we never expect to reach an "Amazon Best Seller" status? Many of us are not visible to major reviewers where we can achieve best seller status, such as New York Times or USA Today. This situation is very disheartening and I'm at my wits end trying to find a way to survive in a very competitive profession.

Please -- if your review is ever not posted for an indie author -- challenge Amazon. It's a tedious process, yet, independent authors have few tools by which to convince them that this policy/practice is totally unfair.

In addition to this, under the Kindle Unlimited program, Amazon is no longer paying an author when the reader has completed 10% of the book. It is paying us per page and only when the book is initially read. Therefore, if a person buys a book and does not finish it at the time they start reading (at the end of July) but finishes it after their family reunion (in August), it's unclear as to whether we will get paid for the full book, since royalties are calculated at the end of each month and the purchase can only be counted once. Additionally, why should we not get paid simply because the book is purchased when Amazon continues to get paid when the book is bought?

More and more, I'm convinced that, although Amazon publishes authors using their Kindle Direct Publishing, it stacks the deck against those same independent authors. Your voice, as readers and bloggers, can make a difference in how we're treated, so please consider that when interacting with Amazon.

Thank you for your support.

You Can Help Me Spread the Word

I've started a THUNDERCLAP campaign and would love for each of you to support me by signing up to share the announcement of my newest book on your Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts.

What is THUNDERCLAP? It's a way to introduce an event to a large group of people at one time. I'm using it to herald the release of Loving Night: Dream Catcher Series - Book 2. All you have to do is sign up (a widget is conveniently located on this home page). At noon on May 31st, the message I've created will be blasted to you and all of your followers on those social media sites. Don't worry -- it will only happen once so no one will get spammed. Right now, my announcement can reach over 57,000 people. That's a great number, but there are so many more readers out there that I'm sure will enjoy this book. You can help me to reach them.

There's just one catch. In order for my message to be seen by any of those people, 100 of my family, friend, and fans will need to sign up for my campaign. If I don't get 100 participants, no message will be sent. You can see the status bar in the widget, so it's clear that I have a long way to go.

Sign up. Share the link with your family and friends so that they can also sign up right now. And we all can smile on May 31st when the "clap" goes out and everyone gets my message at the same time. It's only with your help that I can hope to be successful. As always, I sincerely appreciate each person who chooses to be a part of this magnificent experience as a writer.

Loving Night is Coming Soon!

June 1, 2015 is the release date for Loving Night, the 2nd novel in the Dream Catcher romantic suspense series.

This book was a lot of fun to write. The continuing story of Stephanie and Chaz Lawson not only provided an opportunity to further demonstrate their intense love for each other, it gave me a chance to show the couple truly working together as a team. This is a story of a great partnership -- one that must survive the dangerous life that Chaz is not completely able to leave behind.

Old characters turn up in new situations. New psychic elements begin to surface. Drama. Danger. Love. Commitment.  This book has it all. It's currently available to pre-order on Amazon, so reserve your copy today.

We Soared!!

It's always good to get something for FREE, right? RIGHT!! I gave away some things on St. Patrick's Day, but I got so much more. I couldn't have done it without the readers, authors who have encouraged me, and my family. (Sounds like an awards acceptance speech, doesn't it?)

We had an incredible day, thanks to the FREE book promotion and the gift card giveaways. The way my four books moved up in the rankings was absolutely amazing. The speed was nothing short of miraculous. I kept checking my KDP Report every 20 minutes or so because the number of books being downloaded just kept rising and rising. By the time the 24-hour window was closed, people had download 2596 books!

Then, I looked at the rankings for FREE books and did my Snoopy Happy Dance. There is no way to describe my joy as I watched my works rise in their individual categories and in the Free Store overall. Since Amazon hundreds of thousands of FREE books at any point in time, you'll see why our accomplishments have me floating high in the clouds.

Time for Tenderness blew me away! Out of my books, it was the number one downloaded (818 copies!) and my best performer on the Best Sellers ranking. By the end of the night, it ranked #2 in African America Romance and #5 in Literature & Fiction. Overall in the Kindle Free Store, it was #208.

Monica's Healing was right behind it with 789 downloads. It finished on the Best Sellers list at #3 in African American Romance and #6 in Literature & Fiction. Overall in the Kindle Free Store, it was #226.

Premonitions also made me proud. It was downloaded by 664 people! My tongue was probably hanging out of my mouth when I saw that it also hit #2 in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category. Overall, it finished at #281 in the Kindle Free Store.

Detour was my biggest surprise! It finished at #59 in Literature & Fiction's Coming of Age category. Being the first book I published nearly a year ago, I am honored at the recent interest that caused 254 people to download it. That took it to #868 in the Kindle Free Store.

Yep -- I'm still smiling! Hundreds of thousands of books. HUNDREDS of thousands of books!! That was my competition. I'm going to be smiling for a long, long, time.

A Peek into Premonitions

I thought you might enjoy another excerpt from my romantic suspense, Premonitions, the first book in the Dream Catcher series.

He had seen her first and couldn’t mistake the concern on her face. Chaz excused himself from the person he was talking with and was already heading directly toward her when she looked in his direction. He didn’t miss seeing the moment she noticed the sling supporting his left arm or the sadness that filled her eyes when theirs met.

“It’s nothing,” he dismissed as he reached her.

She leaned close and softly said that a gunshot wound isn’t “nothing” and saw confusion wrinkle his brow. He quickly told the bartender he’d be in his office and led her along the edge of the room to the hallway marked PRIVATE.

“What do you know about it?” he asked suspiciously as they stepped into the smaller room. He motioned for her to sit in one of the two leather chairs in front of his desk.

“Only what I saw in a dream.” She waited for the look of utter disbelief. It never came. She wiped her hands on the rough denim of her jeans and continued. “The first time I dreamed it was about a week ago, then again three nights ago.” She told him all the details that she could remember from that second night when everything had been clear.

“And you dreamed this? Twice?” He watched her nod and recalled the night they’d met and her question about whether he believed in people having strong vibes. He believed her. “How?”

“It’s something I’ve always done—have dreams that come true. It doesn’t happen all the time.” She stared back at him with relief. “You haven’t laughed at me, yet.”

His head shook. He wouldn’t laugh at the sincere concern that had brought her to him.

“Let’s just say that I believe the mind works in ways we don’t understand. And you weren’t with me, so there is no other explanation for your knowing what you do.” He sat in the chair beside hers and reached for her hand: it was trembling and he wanted to calm her.

“I got shot three nights ago; the same night as your second dream. The bullet didn’t do a lot of damage but the wound will still take a little while to heal.” His fingers curled more securely around hers before he added, “The weird thing is that I thought I saw you that night while I was recovering from surgery. Your hair was loose and you were wearing a blue nightgown. I assumed it was a hallucination because of the anesthesia. But it wasn’t, was it?” His eyes searched hers for the truth.
"This is a crazy question, but did you come to me in a vision, Stephanie?”

“I don’t know; maybe it’s possible.” She told him about the pain she’d felt during that second dream that hadn’t gone away until the next morning. “I’ve never been connected like that.”

Connected. It was the perfect word, Chaz decided.

“Do the police know who shot you?”

“They’re working on it.” He reached over to push a stray curl behind her ear.

Stephanie heard the evasiveness in his answer but didn’t say anything. Instead, she briefly touched the side of his face. The intensity of her concern showed in her eyes and moved him. He resisted an immediate urge to pull her onto his lap and just hold her; just let them enjoy whatever was drawing them together. But, he couldn’t ignore his surroundings or the truth about his job.

“This isn’t a good idea,” came from him.

“Life plays out like it has to, Chaz.”

“Aren’t you afraid to be with a man who just got shot?”

She shook her head. “I’m more afraid to not be with you,” was her honest reply. Whatever it meant, Chaz was part of her destiny. She leaned forward and kissed him, lightly at first and then again until he sighed and allowed the exchange to have more depth. As had happened when he’d touched her in the restaurant, Stephanie felt electricity pass through them.

Longing sprang to life and caused a conflict between his head and his heart. The timing was all wrong; his life was getting more dangerous and he wanted to shield her from it. Still, he wanted her, suspected from the way her kisses drew him that maybe he even needed her. But he might not be able to keep her safe, he argued with himself.

Well, he’d have to figure it out.

Chaz looked into her face and asked, “Do you trust me, Stephanie?” She nodded. “I’m not a bad person. But there are things happening around here that I can’t let impact you. So, for now, I won’t be able to let anyone know about us.” He studied her for a reaction. Nothing. “When we’re together, it can’t be here, okay?”

“Okay,” she agreed even though she didn’t understand. It didn’t matter. Stephanie trusted her instincts. At that moment, they were telling her that his concern for her was sincere, just as hers was for him.

Chaz asked for her cell phone and input his number. Then he allowed himself the luxury of holding and kissing her for a few minutes before he walked with her to the front of the pool hall and watched her leave.

His phone rang only seconds after she was gone.

“Who was that?” Morgan’s voiced asked.

“No one important.” Chaz glanced up at the black tinted dome above the bar that concealed a surveillance camera and was immediately reminded that the man downstairs was able to watch most of what went on above him.

“Don’t get careless, partner,” was a gentle warning. The call ended. Chaz understood. Morgan was being very protective since the shooting. And he had a right to be. A lot was at stake, and Chaz was the key to nearly a year of hard work.

Reading My Way Through the Year

Image result for goodreads reading challenge LOGO
I'm participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge. Are you? So far, I'm one-third of the way to my goal; but then, I'm a voracious reader with more spare time than most people. Here's a strategy you can use if your TBR list isn't already full. Browse the Facebook groups for FREE books -- lots of times the first book in a series is free or 99 cents. Grab it, and if you like it, that will make it easier to complete your goal by allowing yourself to get pulled into a series. I find that I read faster and take fewer breaks between books when I'm dying to know what will happen next.

There are so many books I could recommend. Two solid African American authors of series who have never disappointed me are Chicki Brown and Shewanda Pugh.  You can read my reviews of their work by clicking the links on the right edge of this blog. Toye Lawson-Brown, Nikki Walker, and M.J. Kane will also keep you very well-entertained.

If you're into erotic romances, then I've got a few for you there too: Fifi Flowers (Awakening Trilogy), Louise Bay (Empire State Trilogy), Geneva Lee (Royal Saga Series), Roxy Sloane (The Submission Series), and Renna Peak (Mistaken Series followed by the Broken Series).

And of course, you can click on the tabs above for information on all of my books or just follow this link to my Amazon page where you can purchase them.  http://www.amazon.com/Brynette-L.-Turner/e/B00KMBJVRU

HAPPY READING!

How Do You Like This New Look?

Premonitions: Dream Catcher Series ~ Book One has undergone a little face lift. Don't worry; it's the same great story. I simply wanted to give the cover a different look.

The next two books in the series will  have similar styles. I'm really excited about the way those projects are going. As of right now, I'm planning on releasing Book 2 (Loving Night) in June. Please mark your calenders and plan on getting a copy. That would be greatly appreciated.

Happy for the Holidays

With the holiday season in full swing, many of us are planning those gift lists, pondering menus for those Christmas parties, and preparing for the wonderful hustle and bustle of these next few weeks. This is my favorite time of the year.

We don't have any snow right now, but I'm wishing for a white Christmas -- as long as the white is snow and not ice. I still remember that horrible ice storm that made our transformer explode and kept us without power for a full week. We packed our groceries and cooked Christmas dinner at a friend's house while she had plans to celebrate elsewhere. That was really wonderful for her to let us do. I've been gifted with friends like that.

So, as we step more fully into the season, I want to wish everyone joy and peace.

Almost Turkey Time

I know I haven't posted in a while. What can I say except that life is full of ups and downs. But we're headed into the one period of the year that usually make me happiest.

I absolutely LOVE Thanksgiving and am so excited that it's only one week away. Oh my!! I need to go to the grocery store!! We always cook way too much food and we each have our favorites. Mine is cornbread dressing with lots of gravy. One daughter loves candied yams. The other is a fiend for baked macaroni and cheese. Then there are leftover turkey sandwiches and turkey-sausage gumbo for the next few days.

After dinner is cleared away and we wake up from our food-induced comas, we put up the Christmas tree and decorate the livingroom. Our cats always try to get in on the activity by stealing ornaments and batting at the blinking lights. One year, they climbed into the tree.

It's a day of genuine smiles and sincere laughter. I hope that your holiday celebration brings tons of happiness.
